Varietal

Over the past decade, the wine world has seen an increasing trend toward the identification on wine labels of the specific grape(s) “responsible” for what’s inside the bottle; American consumers in particular are very varietal-conscious, and winemakers around the world are increasingly willing to accommodate us. Not surprisingly, then, one of our can’t-do-without wine references is Jancis Robinson’s handy pocket-sized Guide to Wine Grapes, which lists and describes more than 800 different varieties . . . providing more than ample proof that there’s more to life than Cabernet and Chardonnay. We’ve had to limit our categories somewhat for space reasons, but sorting our offerings by grape variety enables us to pay a small tribute to the diversity that still exists in the world’s vineyards.
