Country/Region : Austria

Once seen as a virtual "clone" of Germany, Austria has in recent decades laid claim to its own vinous personality. Its forte traditionally has been its white wines, especially those from its very own grape, Gruner Veltliner, but also produces outstanding red varietals as well; Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch. The vineyards are mostly located in the eastern part of the country, both north and south of Vienna, with vines growing right up to the city's residentail suburbs and into the storied Vienna woods. The climate here is warm, dry and continental; the soil and other viticulture aspects widely vary, but the relatively modest yields can resutl in wines that are fiery, peppery, full of citrus and are intensly flavored.
