"Wine Australia" itself comprises several wildly different wine regions, from the hot and often humid Lower Hunter Valley just north of Sydney to the cool maritime climate of the Mornington Peninsula, and from the Burgundy-like Yarra Valley to the hot and dry Barossa Valley along with the Mediterranean-styled wine regions of Western Australia (and many others in between) make up one of the largest wine producing countries in the world. Through much of the 20th century empahsis was largely on value and quantity, but recent years have seen a growing concern for high-quality, site-specific wines.
