Country/Region : Chile

Like Portugal and Spain, Chile has had, wine-wise, to emerge from a bit of a time-warp over the last twenty years; their return to democracy in 1988, after decades of political dictatorship, and their return to participation in the global economy has had far-reaching impact on their wine industry. As with Argentina, the country's wine-making style in was geared to the tastes of the domestic market, which provide to be largely unsuitable for export markets. In the last decade winemakers here have had to turn on the proverbial dime, but the good ones have done so gracefully, pointing the way to the high quality level they are clearly capable of. The 1990s saw extensive replanting, major investment in modern equipment, the creation of new wineries, and an explosion in exports. Truly Chile, like Argentina, has emerged from its time-warp . . . With a vengeance!
