Country/Region :
Italy
If France is a whole world of differences in one country, Italy is even more so. Remember that Italy as a country is even younger than the US, dating its unification only from 1871; before that it was a crazy-quilt of (often) squabbling city-states with a variety of different political allegiances. Divisions and distinctions remain today, most notably between the affluent industrial north and the poorer agrarian south. Whether north or south, however, Italy is remarkably rich in indigenous grape varieties, more than can be found in any other major grape-growing country in the world, including France: Tuscany boasts Sangiovese in its many different clones, while Piedmont contends with Barbera, Dolcetto and the noble Nebbiolo. Agliancico stars in the south, while Sicily offers Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese and Sardinia comes forward with Cannonau . . . And these are just a few of the reds!
