Country/Region :
South Africa
For South Africa, the potential has always been there: an almost perfect Mediterranean climate cooled by the Benguela current from Antarctica. But the road to achievement has been rocky and potholed, to say the least. The winemaking tradition on the Cape goes back well over three centuries to the 1680s, in fact, when Huguenots fleeing religious persecution in France arrived here, bringing with them their significant winemaking knowledge and expertise. Our own exposure to wines from the Cape, however, dates largely from the lifting of apartheid in the early 1990s, prior to which economic sanctions had been a major impediment. Today the Cape wine industry is sprinting forward rapidly to catch up with innovation and aggressive marketing; once ten years behind the rest of the world, South Africa is now at the forefront of viticulture research.
