Born and raised in Naples, Giampaolo Motta was supposed to work in the family's leather business, but in the early 90's he fell in love with a spot in Tuscany and found his new home. Restructuring a manor house built in Conca d'Oro in Panzano and replanting vineyards with Sangiovese and Merlot were only the beginning of the challenges he accepted when he bought La Massa in 1992. He quickly realized that his true destiny was to produce great wines from Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. His limited production wines stand out today as some of Italy's finest expressions of these varietals. Giorgio is usually a blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Merlot aged for 18 months in oak barrels. The 1996 vintage is fully mature and still showing balancing acidity, a good red fruit profile, and nice tannic structure.
