A third growth, the elegant, refined, traditional Château Calon-Ségur is one of the northernmost classified growths of the Médoc, in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The estate has been divided over the centuries (Montrose and Phelan Ségur were formerly also part of the Calon estate). The vineyard is planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot with vines of 38 years of age on average. The wines are fermented in oak and aged in oak barrels for 24 to 26 months. The 2005 Calon- Ségur is a beauty that encompasses voluptuous red fruits, balancing acidity and firm yet integrated tannins with great ageing potential. Balanced, delicate yet rich and generous without being heavy or overly fruity, this elegant wine is a keeper.
