Crafting wines for the past 700 years, Frescobaldi is one of Tuscany's biggest producers, combining tradition with innovation. Lamaione is an exceptionally superb Super-Tuscan produced by the CastelGiocondo winery from Merlot grown in the 30-acre Lamaione vineyard, whose vines were planted in 1976 at an elevation of 1,000 feet. It was aged for 24 months in new French oak barrels. Lamaione is a dense, impenetrable purple-red; it has a nose rich with blackberry, black currant, and blueberry, followed by scents of black pepper, tobacco, and leather. Gunflint and minerally notes of pencil lead conclude an impressive amalgam. The massive concentration in the mouth is more than complemented by a long, compelling finish. Pair it with slow-cooked dishes such as pot roast, mushroom-enriched stews, or beef fillet or with medium-aged cheeses.
