Alto Moncayo 05 Aquillon 750 ml
This winery in Campo de Borja, an area east of Navarra, is a partnership between U.S.-based importer Jorge Ordońez, Australian winemaker Chris Ringland, and Borsao, a local bodega. It debuted with the 2002 vintage, and every year the wines have improved. They are dense, ripe reds based on low-yield Garnacha, made with traditional methods, but aged in new oak. Three Garnacha-based wines are made at the winery, Aquillon being the top of the line. The 2005 "Aquillon" exhibits aromas of slate, violets and ripe cherry with hints of oak. The palate is rich, balanced and opulent with good integration of oak, tannin, and acidity. It offers a smooth texture, layers of flavor, and exceptional length. Still very young, it can be drunk now after being decanted or it can be aged for an additional four-six years.
