Ridge 92 Monte Bello 750 ml
Famed Ridge Vineyards in California's Santa Clara county was, in 1959, an abandoned hilltop property when it was bought by several members of the Stanford Research Institute for use as a campground and retreat. Subsequent discovery of the remnants of what was once the famous Monte Bello vineyard, originally planted in 1892, and of other lower vineyards planted to Cabernet in the 1940s, changed all that. Dave Bennion, one of the four SRI engineers who had bought the property, made the first Ridge Monte Bello Cab in 1960 and '61, and the wine showed such distinctive character and quality that the four decided to re-bond the winery in time for the next vintage. Paul Draper, now the acknowledged heart, mind, and soul of Ridge, came on board in 1969. Today Ridge works with grapes from seven different viticulture areas but Monte Bello continues to be its flagship label, a traditional Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The 1992 vintage is a rich, intense, concentrated wine, well balanced, with blackberry and black cherry flavors and a lingering aftertaste.
