Gianni Gagliardo, impressive Barolo producer though he is, has a special fondness for the dessert-wine grapes of Piedmont, Brachetto (for red) and Moscato (for white), which he produces under the "Villa M" label. For his Moscato, he picks the grapes early and keeps the wine in stainless steel tanks at near-freezing temperatures to arrest any additional fermentation; the end result is a distinctive sweet wine with fruity perfume and low alcohol. There are hints of almond, melon and ripe stone fruit on the nose, while there are small bubbles, pear, melon, passion fruit and crisp apple tones on the palate. Perfect with pastries, fruits, custards and aged cheeses.
