Viviani 05 Recioto della Valpolicella
Greatly admired Venetian producers Claudio and Cinzia Viviani own a small (25 acres) estate in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico zone of northeastern Italy, near the town of Verona. Sharing a hilltop with the hamlet of Mazzano, the patch of land which they cultivate is widely regarded as one of the best vineyard sites in the whole of the Valpolicella region. Said to have received advice and guidance from Romano dal Forno early on in their careers and from their neighbor Guiseppe Quintarelli, the Vivianis are now out to forge their own reputation with their wine, remaining loyal to tradition but also staging something of a renaissance with new vineyard plantations and techniques. Their Recioto, made from grapes left to dry for several months (it takes grapes from more than three vines to make one bottle), is a rich, Port-like wine of tremendous complexity, with a rich concentration of currant, plum, and black cherry flavors.
