Henriques & Henriques was founded in 1850 by Joao Goncalves Henriques; after his death in 1912 a partnership was formed between his sons, Francisco Eduardo and Joao Joaquim Henriques, hence Henriques & Henriques. The firm almost immediately assumed an important role in viticulture and winemaking on Madeira, and by 1925 they were firmly established as a shipper of its own wines. With the death in 1968 of the last f the Henriques (who had no heirs) the firm passed to three of his friends and partners, Alberto Nascimento Jardim, Peter Cossart (who made 53 vintages with the company), and Carlos Nunes Pereira. To this day they are considered arguably the finest producer on the island. Belem’s Madiera was established in 1932 by the last surviving member of the Henriques family, popularly known as “João de Belém,” and pays homage to the ancestral home of the Henriques family in Belém, Câmara de Lobos, Firm and concentrated, with great balance and complexity. This is a decidedly sweet Madeira, a great partner to blue cheeses and a wide range of desserts.
