Dating from 1896, Lustau was originally an Almacenista, a modest estate with small holdings that sold most of its wine to large exporting bodegas. It was not until the 1950s that Lustau became Emilio Lustau SA and joined the ranks of a select group of exporters of Sherry. Their East India Solera is made in the style of the sherries that used to sail around the horn of Africa to the troops in India. It is a blend of two high-quality mature (12 years old) wines, an aged dry Oloroso and an aged sweet Pedro Ximenez made from sun-dried grapes. Once blended the wine is returned to American oak casks to “marry” together for a period of three years prior to bottling. The end result is a sweet, full-bodied sherry with a complex nose of burnt sugar and spices and a smooth consistency with balancing acidity.
