It was Antonio Benedetto Carpano who invented vermouth in Turin, all the way back in 1786, and his invention became so popular that Carpano had to keep his shop open twenty-four hours a day to satisfy his customers. Today his name lives on in the line of spirits produced by Fratelli Branca Distillerie of Milan. This Botanic Bitter is a recent addition to the Carpano line. It is made with a combination of ten aromatic herbs, including bitter orange peel, fresh green orange peel, gentian, cinchona, saffron, wormwood, zedoria, sandal, rhubarb and myrrh. It packs quite a bitter punch, with plenty of herbaceous elements and bright citrus, along with a fragrant, floral edge.
