Produced by the Carthusian monks high in the French Alps, the original version of Chartreuse dates back to 1605. The monks maintain a simple, prayer-filled life in their ancient monastery. As they have done for centuries, they appoint three brothers who are charged with producing the liqueurs and keeping the recipes. This Gentiane, first produced by the monks in 1998, is an artful blend of gentian root, citrus distillates, and secret herbs. Offering a lighter, earthier, more herbal profile than their classic versions of Chartreuse, it is Alpine in spirit, with a balanced, bittersweet finish.
