New York City’s 69th Infantry Regiment was formed in 1849 by Irish nationalists who fled their homeland after participating in a failed rebellion against British rule during the height of the potato famine. It was christened the “Fighting 69th” during the Civil War by none other than Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, who saw the New Yorkers rout his own ferocious “Louisiana Tigers” during the battle of Malvern Hill in 1862. This Irish whiskey is a tribute to the regiment, the brainchild of Col. James Tierney, a retired regiment officer who spent a decade as the unit’s historian. Sourced along the southern Irish coast and aged there in once-used bourbon and sherry casks, its unique mash bill combines the finest malted barley, fermented and distilled with pure Irish water, resulting in a fine Irish whiskey that evokes the motto of the fighting 69th: "Gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked."
