Lagavulin Bay, on the south shores of Islay, is said to have housed as many as ten illicit stills in the 1700s, but it wasn’t until 1816 that a man by the name of John Johnston purchased a license and began to build the distillery as we know it today. Seemingly little has changed in the more than 200 years since. Like many Islay whiskies, Lagavulin has built its profile on strong peat flavors, but they balance that smoky note with a rich sherry-driven sweetness. This liimited edition 11-year-old diverges somewhat from the Lagavulin norm, however, using first-fill ex-bourbon American oak barrels for aging here, to achieve a spirit that absorbs rich layers of vanilla, caramel, and orchard fruit that soften and complement the distillery’s legendary maritime character.
