The Sagamore Spirit Distillery is located in the Baltimore Peninsula neighborhood, just a short drive from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor; it was founded in 2012 (although the distillery opened only in 2017) by Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank and Bill McDermond with the specific aim of reviving Maryland style rye whiskey. The brand was acquired by Italian drinks company Illva Saronno in 2023. For those unaware (or unsure), Maryland-style rye features a fruity, flooral, or slightly sweet profile with less aggressive spice than other styles, and Sagamore’s offerings epitomize that character. This 10-Year, aged at least that long in charred American white oak, is super-smooth, readily showing the depth of a mature rye whiskey.
