Located in Snežatno. In the Goriška Brda zone of Slovenia, near the border with Italy, the Štekar winery is known for producing red and white wines made in the traditional manner, with extended skin contact and little or no sulphur added. Roman Stekar had been selling his grapes to his local cooperative here, but in 1985 decided to make his own wines. Jure Sekar, Roman’s son, is the current winemaker. The small (25 acres) vineyard is planted to a mix of Malvasia, Ribolla Gialla, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. This Rebula, the Slovenian name for Ribolla Gialla, is an “orange wine,” made with that extended skin contact referred to above (24 days, in this instance). The wine is aromatic and inviting, showcasing yellow fruit, a firm structure, and deep base tones.
