Torres is unquestionably Spain’s leading wine brand. Founded in 1870, the company is still family-owned, with current head Miguel Torres representing the fourth generation and the fifth generation already in the company. They own nearly 43,000 acres in Catalonia and now also make wine in other regions of Spain, including Toro, Jumilla, and Priorat, and buy in additional grapes (but never wine) as they need to. The “Celeste” project began some years ago in the Ribera del Duero (the name comes from the vineyards there being at nearly 3,000 feet, and the Torres winery there is called Pago de Cielo) but has since reached beyond its original appellation to establish a presence in Rueda. This is 100% Verdejo, intensely aromatic, with fennel, citrus, and pineapple on the nose and a crisp palate redolent of mango and peach.
