Adi Badenhorst bought his 75-acre estate in Swartland in 2007, largely for one reason: the vines date from the 1950s and are free-standing bush vines, low off the ground. James Molesworth’s profile of Badenhorst in Wine Spectator a few years ago catches his character nicely: “There’s nothing cultivated about his image: He’s a wooly bear, with a pony tail that looks like it’s been wrestled into submission, pork-chop sideburns and a former rugby player’s body. Talkative, loud, engaging and fully immersed in making wine, Badenhorst is currently carving out his own little corner of the Swartland.” Adi has chosen to specialize in blends, both red and white, and he is looked upon by many as more of an alchemist than a winemaker. Secateurs (the French name for vineyard pruning shears) is the winery’s second label, used for their Chenin Blanc, the occasional rosé, and this red blend, in this vintage a blend of Cinsault, Shiraz, and Grenache. This is a supple, smooth wine with great elegance but with enough grip to end dry and refreshing.
