Harry and Maggie Wetzel bought the historic Cyrus Alexander homestead in 1962, raising their children along with their vines in the Alexander Valley. The winery was actually founded by the second generation, Hank Wetzel and his wife Linda, in 1975. Today the property remains in the Wetzel family, now in the fourth generation, John, Robert, and Harry Wetzel IV. The 700-acre estate works with some 14 different varietals, but roughly 75% of what they produce is red, Zinfandel taking pride of place followed shortly by Cab. This is classic Sonoma County Cabernet, plush and juicy, markedly fruit-forward, with a rich, velvety texture, well-integrated tannins, and a smooth and balanced finish.
