Alta Yari is the newest venture for Herve Fabre, a Bordelais who left France for the wilds of Argentina forty years ago. His first project, Fabre Montmayou, was centered on hundred-year-old Malbec vines in Mendoza. He next bought vineyards and a winery in Patagonia, making wines in a very different style from those in Mendoza. Alta Yari brings him to Gualtallary, whose terroir he deems “one of the best I have ever found.” Nestled between the plains of Mendoza and the Andes, these vineyards are planted at altitudes more than 1400 feet above sea level. This Gran Malbec, aged in French oak for 16 months, is deeply fruited with strong mineral notes; the extreme growing conditions of the terroir give it richness, elegance and a lingering finish.
