Tending the vines planted by his grandfather, Claudio Ancarani is now at the helm of this small 25-acre winery. Claudio applies natural vineyard management, promoting biodiversity in his land; he uses no herbicides, only copper and sulfur. He believes in winemaking with minimal intervention and uses indigenous yeast, no new oak, and adds close to zero sulfites. Claudio is proudly championing the rediscovery of the local indigenous grapes, including this Centesimino (Ancarani is one of only eight winemakers producing a version of the grape). A few words about ther grape: Until the 19th century it was called Savignôn Rosso, although it is no relation to Sauvignon Blanc. In the middle of the last century, during the reconstruction of vineyards after phylloxera, Pietro Pianori propagated this obscure variety from old vines growing in his walled garden at Podere Terbato in Faenza. Those vines had fortunately escaped phylloxera, and all modern plantings derive from cutting taken from Pianori’s garden. Pianori was nicknamed “Centesimino” (meaning “little cent), which gave the grape its modern name. Ancarani’s version is done entirely in stainless steel and cement vats. It is highly floral with strong evidence of rose notes, dry and persistent on the palate, with a good tannic structure.
