All things considered, this seems an unlikely spot for wine production, yet the slopes of Etna are home to more than a dozen wineries, and at elevations of 3,500 feet and more some of these are the highest commercial vineyards in the world. At 2,300 feet, the Barone di Villagrande estate is well up there. The vineyards, dominated by the estate, slope down toward the sea into a natural amphitheater. The lands have always belonged to this family, and the estate has been producing wines since 1727. Mostly Nerello Mascalese with small amounts of two other local grapes blended in, the wine is bright, with lively crushed cherry fruit supported by moderate mineral acidity, more about finesse than power; dry on the palate, it has delicate berry aromas with a persistent and harmonious aftertaste.
