Bernard and Jocelyn, and son Loic Dugat-Py represent the twelfth and thirteenth generations of this family making wine on their 25-acre property in Gevry-Chambertin in the heart of Burgundy. In spite of the family’s long history here, however, the domaine began estate-bottling only in 1989. Bernard Dugat-Py is widely recognized as one of the shrewdest winemakers on the Côte. The vines are for the most part extremely old, averaging 65 years of age across the domaine, and all the trimming is done by hand, while a horse is used to plough a few of the vineyards. Replanting is done with selections from their own vine stock, never with clones. The domaine has been fully organic since 2003 while son Loïc has been doing some biodynamic work with consultant Paul Masson. The wines are vinified with as little intervention as possible and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. This Cuvee Halinard is effectively declassified Gevrey-Chambertin, from vines that are between 25 and 75 years of age. This is a medium-bodied, elegant Pinot with aromas and flavors of ripe red berries and cherries. This is eminently ageworthy Burgundy but, given the quality of the fruit, it is perfectly delicious young.
