Blackbird Vineyards, located in the Oak Knoll district of Napa Valley, began life in 1996 as a small Merlot-focused vineyard. It became a winemaking enterprise in 2002, marking a significant stage in its development five years on with the addition of stellar young winemaker Aaron Potts. John and Julia Hinshaw joined the operation as investors, becoming majority owners in 1914, becoming majority owners in 2019. Their commitment from the start has been to the production of Bordeaux-inspired blends, blends that show elegance, structure, and great character, and “Arise” stands as a tribute to their success. (But note they now produce white and a rose as well.) This 2022 version is a blend of mostly Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc, with 11% Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot; with aromas of plums, dried herbs, and bitter chocolate, it is full-bodied, with well integrated tannins and balanced acidity.
