Bernabeleva, which translates as "the bear's forest," was started in 1923 by a noted doctor from Madrid, Vincente Alvarez-Villamil, who identified this piece of land as a special place to plant Grenache. With the onset of the Spanish Civil War, the doctor's dream of making wine ended, only to be revived in 2006 by two of his great-grandchildren, cousins Juan Diez Bulnes and Santiago Matallana Bulnes. Yes, they make a stunning version of Grenache, but this is one of their equally seductive whites, a blend of four native varietals, Albillo Real, Macabeo, Malvar, and Moscatel. Highly aromatic, this is a mid-weight white with lively acidity balanced with a creamy texture.
