Henry Lagarde planted the first vines here in 1897, making this one of the oldest wineries in the Mendoza region of Argentina. Lagarde was acquired by the Pescarmona family in 1969 and is today run by young sisters Sofia and Lucila Pescarmona, the third generation in this winemaking family. Typically for Mendoza, Malbec holds pride of place here, but Lagarde was the first Latin American producer to plant nontraditional varieties such as Viognier and Moscato, something that is reflected in the wide range of offerings in the eight different lines (plus sparkling wine) they produce today. Here we have that Viognier, made entirely from grapes from vines planted in 1906 in Mayor Drummond, in Lujan de Cuyo; it is charmingly floral but zesty on the palate, with a tangy, racy finish.
