Founded in 1942 by Salvador Fariña in Casaseca de las Chanas, 18 miles away from Toro, Fariña is today the oldest winery in the Toro region and one of the most important wineries on the entire Spanish wine scene. Today this remains a family enterprise, with third generation Bernardo Fariña is in charge of the winemaking team. The key grape here is of course Tempranillo (known in this region as Tinto de Toro), but the winery’s “Vino Primero” is something different for Toro, in that it is the first Toro red to be made using the carbonic maceration method of vinification (think Beaujolais Nouveau). Back in 1995 his Dutch importer challenged Manuel Fariña, Bernardo’s father, to make a carbonic maceration wine to offer the market something different. Fariña took up the challenge and this is the result. Brightly fruited on the nose, with floral notes, it is fresh and juicy on the palate.
