Bohigas is a family-owned winery that has roots dating back to the 13th century; the current family and their ancestors have been growing grapes and making wine at this location since 1290. Today the estate encompasses some 750 acres split between two separate vineyard properties. The winery produces both sparkling and still wines, the favored grapes being the traditional white varieties of Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada, and they are one of the few producers to make and bottle a still wine that is 100% Xarel-lo. This is Gran Reserva Cava, a blend of Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada with a small amount of Chardonnay added in. Made using traditional methods and techniques, including aging on the lees for extensive periods, this is a sparkler of cinsiderable complexity and depth, with a creamy texture and crisp acidity.
