Located in the heart of the Val di Cecina, on the Tuscan coast, Caiarossa was founded in 1998 but, more importantly, acquired in 2004 by Eric Albada Jelgersma, a Dutch entrepreneur who is also the owner of Chateau Giscours and Chateau du Tertre. Early on there was considerable effort here to identify the potential of the property through careful soil analysis; the diversity identified led to the planting of eleven different grape varieties: Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre for the reds and Chardonnay, Viognier and Petit Manseng for the whites. The winery currently produces only two wines, both red, Cairossa, which is a blend of the best grapes of the year, and this Pergolaia, which is predominantly Sangiovese, with small amounts of Merlot and the two Cabs blended in. The wine has an intense bouquet and a seductive body, with soft tannins and great depth.
