Located in the town of Miglianico, in the Abruzzo region of southern Italy, this co-operative was founded in 1961 to help local farmers compete with the big wineries located there. Today they number 300 and collectively farm more than a thousand acres of prime Abruzzese vines, focusing as they have always done on the region’s signature grapes. This “Pietra Majella” is largely Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, the primary red grape of the region, softened by the addition of 15% Merlot and given eight months of oak aging. Fairly full-bodied and somewhat rustic, with lots of blackberry fruit and light tannins, this may be the perfect pizza wine.
