Originally founded by an order of Carmelite monks, Chateau Rieussec was, like other church properties, confiscated during the French Revolution and subsequently sold at auction. After passing through numerous owners over the years, it was acquired by the owners of Chateau Lafite Rothschild in 1984, who modernized the estate and virtually doubled it in size. The large (a bit more than 200 acres) vineyard here is planted mostly to Semillon, with some Sauvignon Blanc and a small amount of Muscadelle, all on slopes that are some of the highest in the appellation (only those at Yquem are higher). Carmes de Rieussec, the name invoking the founders of the estate, is one of the names for the winery’s second label. Like its big brother, this is a Sauternes of thick texture, honey-drenched character, and great concentration of flavors.
