The Quinta de Valle de Olmo estate was founded in the early 1900s by Augusto Cavalho, who planted the vines and sold the crop to various Port wine companies. It was his grandson, Manuel Carvalho-Martins, who realized the potential of these vineyards for producing fine table wines and planted the appropriate varieties; subsequently his sons, Vasco and Rui, began bottling the estate’s production and offering the results for sale. The winery is in the town of Meda, which gives its name to this section of the Douro, and the vineyards are at an altitude of 1700 to 1900 feet. Their white is a blend of three native varietals, Rabigato, Voisinho, and Gouvelho from vines planted more than 25 years ago; it is richly textured and full of ripe fruits, yet refreshingly crisp with a fine dense texture.
