The Pinols have been grape growers in the Terra Alta region of Spain for four generations. They began producing and selling their own wine in 1945, when Josep Arrufi founded Cellers Vinos Pinol. Today Josefina Piñol and her son, Juanjo Galcera Piñol, are at the helm. Celler Vinos Piñol owns 100 acres of carefully tended vines, in and around the medieval town of Batea, in the Terra Alta district of the Tarragona province, which is located a few miles south and west of Priorat. The vineyards are organically farmed and certified by CCPAE. Their Raig de Raim (“Ray of Grape” in Catalan) is a blend of Garnacha, Carinena and Syrah, a blend that combines elegantly to produce a complex wine with floral and berry fruit aromas framed by fennel, herbs, and a touch of oak in the long finish.
