There are four Cesconi brothers, and together they work some 52 acres of vineyard around the village of Pressano in the Alto Adige. The key qualities which set Cesconi`s wines apart from the multitude of other examples of these varieties are their concentration, perfect level of extraction and precise balance. This is attributable to the work of the four brothers who have transformed their family estate in the past decade. Whereas the family previously sold all their fruit to the co-op at Lavis, today they are making some of Italy’s most exciting wines. This “Moratel” is a blend of four red grape varieties that are grown in two distinct areas that differ in both soil and climate: Lagrein, which is grown in Pressano, where the soil is largely sedimentary rock, and Merlot, Teroldego, and Cabernet grown in Valle dei Laghi, where the soil is rich in clay and silt. The wine is aged for only nine months in large used barrels, resulting in a red that is velvety and perfumed, with notes of red and black berries, complemented by generous soft tannins.
