Lucien Leclerc founded this Champagne house with ten acres of vineyards in 1872. Originally located in Cumieres, the enterprise was moved to Epernay in 1955 when Bertrand Leclerc married Jacqueline Briant and formed the négociant firm which still carries their name. Leclerc Briant was an early adopter of organic practices beginning in the 1960s and was one of the first to bottle single-vineyard Champagnes starting in the 1970s. In the late 1980s, Bertrand and Jacqueline’s son Pascal began integrating biodynamic principles and part of the production has been Demeter certified since 2003. In 2012 the winery was purchased by enologist Hervé Jestin and Frédéric Zeimett, along with an American couple who were investing in hospitality and Champagne, Mark Nunelly and Denise Dupré. This Reserve Extra Brut, which represents 70% of the estate’s total production, is entirely from to 2020 vintage; a 40/40/20 blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay, it is bright and fresh, highly accessible, with aromas and flavors of apple and pear, a satiny texture, and a persistent, lightly spiced finish.
