Sylvie Cazes, former president of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux, co-owner of Chateau Lynch Bages, and former director of Chateau Pichon Comtesse de Lalande, acquired Chateau Chauvin in May of 2014; previously the estate had been in the hands of the Ondet family since 1891. Chauvin is a 38-acre estate in the northwest part of St. Emilion, near the border with Pomerol and very close to Chateau Cheval Blanc. The vineyard is a 75/20/5 mix of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. This 2019 vintage has been acclaimed as an impressive wine that feels very true to the estate, with plenty of St. Emilion signature. Almost entirely Merlot with a bit of Cabernet Franc blended in, it is rich and full, with ripe, fruity aromas of wild strawberries and cherries, great energy on the palate, with mouth-filling tannins, and great length, with some white pepper on the finish.
