Back in the early 1800s, what is now the Montrose property was actually part of the Calon Segur estate. Then-owner of Calon Segur Etienne Dumoulin identified part of the property as having a unique hillside gravel terroir and separated it out, creating what is now Montrose; eventually the Dumoulins sold Calon Segur and kept Montrose. From those days on Montrose changed hands three times, most recently in 2006 when it was bought by Martin and Thomas Bouygues, owners of Bouygues Telecom and Bouygues Construction, who brought in new management and entered on an intensive renovation project. St. Estephe de Montrose, renamed in 2016 as Tertio de Montrose, is the third wine of the estate, made only in select vintages and usually available only to restaurants, due to its early-drinking charm. A Merlot-driven blend, it shows fresh flowers and spice on the nose and is round, full and fleshy on the palate, a good reflection of the appellation.
