Chateau Pesdesclaux dates from 1810, when Pierre Urbain Pedesclaux bought vineyard land from another Pauillac estate, Grand Puy. The estate was enlarged in 1883 with the purchase of additional land from neighboring Pontet Canet. From 1891 on the chateau passed through numerous hands until it was acquired in 1950 by Lucien Jugla, who worked arduously to restore it from years of neglect. In 2009 the family sold to Jacky Lorenzetti, owner of Chateau Lillian Ladouys, who now also owns Chateaux d’Issan and Lafon Rochet. The vineyards here are planted to a 59/36 mix of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with the rest being Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. This vintage, a blend of all four varietals, is vibrant and silky, with great freshness to the fruit and great aromatics of blackberries, smoke, and cassis. Critics say this is clearly an estate on the rise: give the wine at least seven years before pulling the cork.
