Pegau is an old name in the southern Rhone. The Feraud family is able to trace their roots all the way back to the middle of the 17th century here. That is when the ancestors of the Feraud family first planted grape vines next to their olive trees and other assorted fruit trees in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Today Domaine de Pegau is in the extremely capable hands of Laurence Feraud, who took over from her father starting with the 2005 vintage. In 2012 a large property called Domaine de la Jouve, located four miles from Domaine de Pegau, on the banks of the Rhone, came up for sale and Laurence bought it, renaming it Chateau Pegau. Its 101 acres of vineyards include 62 of Cotes du Rhone Villages and 12 of Cotes du Rhone, the sources for this wine. Cuvee Maclura, named for the Osage orange trees that grow on the property, is a blend primarily of Grenache and Syrah, with some Mourvedre and Cinsault in the mix; it has intense aromas of cassis, blackberry, and spice, with soft, ripe, tannins on the palate and a lingering finish.
