This estate dates from 1633, when it was founded by a nobleman from the Basque region who was known as Sossiondo; the “Mallet” part of the name was added around 1850, when the land was sold to a navy captain of that name. The key figure in the modern era has been Jean Gautreau, the man who came up with the brilliant idea of providing mobile bottling trucks to the Bordeaux chateaux; he died in 2019, at the age of 92, leaving the property to his daughter Sylvia and her son Arthur. This chateau features a fairly large vineyard (some 200 acres), planted to almost equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small amount of Cab Franc. This 2015 is a firm, bright Bordeaux, earthy and spicy, with crunchy cranberry and cassis on the palate and a touch of austerity on the finish.
