Who among us does not love a romantic story? In 1892, Queen Victoria, who was vacationing in Hyères, decided to visit Chateau de la Clapière, an 18th century mansion noted for (among other things) its stunning grounds and especially for its violets, Victoria’s favorite flower. A local child, Victoria Constant, then eight years old, convinced her parents to take her to see the queen, picking some violets for her majesty on the way. Little Victoria fell in love with the chateau and promised herself she would live there one day when she was grown. And indeed she did, for in 1928 Victoria’s daughter Charlotte married Henri Fabre, founder of Maison Fabre, who owned the chateau; Henri turned the property over to his in-laws, thus making Victoria’s dream come true. Victoria died in 1988, at the age of 104, but the property remains part of “Domaine & Chateaux Fabre.” A blend of Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah, this is a classic Provençal rosé with a nose of dried strawberries and roses, a lovely, long palate of strawberries, raspberries, and cherries, and a bracing acidity that brings everything together.
