If you're thinking there area a lot of Conternos in the Piedmont, you're probably right! This one is Diego Conterno, who is considered a rising star in the southern reaches of the Barolo zone. Diego was once part of the famed Conterno Fantino, who make superb though decidedly more modern wines in Monforte d'Alba. But after years as a partner in the winery, Diego decided that he wanted to take a more traditional approach. So in 2000 he sold his share in the company, took his vines, and began anew. Diego and his son Stefano craft classically-styled Nebbiolo-based wines, but they also produce attention-getting Barberas, Piedmont's everyday red. This is a midweight version of the grape, with aromas of lively red fruits and warm spices, good balance, zippy acidity, and fine-grained tannins.
