When Jean Dirler married Ludvine Cadé in 2000, creating Domaine Dirler-Cadé, it represented the union of two historical Alsatian winegrowing families: Jean Dirler is a fifth-generation winemaker whose family had been making wine in the tiny village of Bergholtz, tucked into the lower hills of the Vosge Mountains, since 1871, and Ludvine Cadé’s family owned vineyards in nearby Guebwiller, their property known as Domaine Hell-Cadé. Domaine Dirler-Cadé has since achieved a reputation as one of the finest domaines in Alsace. Their 55 acres of vines are all organically/sustainably farmed, Jean Dirler having been one of the earlier proponents of biodynamic practices in the region. This “Old Vines” Sylvaner is a remarkably deep and pure wine, with minerality balanced by notes of grapefruit and hawthorn flowers.
