Domaine Michel Tete, which also produces/markets wine as Domaine du Clos du Fief, is today in the hands of fourth-generation Michel Tete and his son Sylvain; fourth-generation Michel is widely considered to be the best producer of Julienas, where they are located. Michel and Sylvain harken their wines back to the classics: low yields, meticulously farmed vineyards, and classic winemaking, resulting in serious and mouthwatering examples of terroir-driven reds. As is obvious from the vintage, “La Roche” is their “nouveau” Beaujolais, sourced from 50(+)-year-old Gamay vines and aged briefly in a mix of stainless steel and cement; it is medium-bodied, fresh and juicy, with a chalky, minerally aftertaste. And since it is a “nouveau,” follow the importer’s advice and “drink now!”
