This estate was founded only in 1969 by Roger Perrin, but it is based on vineyards that dated back to the start of the 20th century. When Roger died during the harvest of 1986 the property passed to his son Luc Perrin, who sadly died in 2010 at the age of only 45. Today the property is run by Luc’s sister Veronique Perrin-Rolin, a trained oenologist, and her son Xavier, also a trained oenologist, who had been working in Burgundy before joining his mother. Their domaine in Chateauneuf comprises some 100 acres in 61 separate lots, all planted to the classic red and white grapes of the region, including some of the more obscure ones (Vaccarese, anyone?), and the red versions of Chateauneuf are usually a blend of up to seven or eight of these grapes, with Grenache always in the lead. “Les Galets,” however, is an 80/20 blend of only Grenache and Syrah aged in concrete tanks; a wine of great depth and complexity, it shows cassis and black stone fruits with notes of smoke, leather, and forest floor.
